ARMOURTONE APPLICATION INFORMATION

Surface Preparation
  • Gypsum wallboard substrate: Prepare drywall as for texture and paint (level 3 or higher). Surface may be primed with VariPrime water based primer for better adhesion and increased material coverage.
  • Concrete, stucco or plaster substrates: Cementitious surfaces must be thoroughly cured before the application of ArmourTone finishes. Level surface irregularities with Variance Dry Base or an approved alternative leveler if necessary. Prime entire surface with VariPrime colored primer.

Mixing
  • Mix to a homogenous consistency using a heavy duty ½ drill with a clean rust free paddle at 400-500 rpm. Avoid air entrainment. If adding colorant vials in the field make sure to wash the entire contents of the vial into the pail and mix thoroughly.
  • Mix 24-36 oz of clean potable water into the material that will be used to spray the first, full coverage coat of ArmourTone.
  • Mix 12-16 oz of clean potable water into the material that will be used for the second, texture coat of ArmourTone.
NOTE: Pigment loads, texture and spray equipment will affect the amount of water needed to reach the optimum consistency for spraying each coat, adjust amounts of water added accordingly.

Application of ArmourTone Fine and Sanded
  • For best results keep a wet edge when applying the finish coat of ArmourTone. A wet edge need not be maintained on the first coat. Use pails with the same batch number within a wall section for best results.
  • Use clean spray equipment with adequate and consistent air supply. Vary orifice size as needed to achieve desired texture.
  • First coat: Apply first coat of ArmourTone using a small orifice size (1/8-3/16“) and high air pressure (70-80 p.s.i.). First coat should be applied with full coverage over the substrate. If there are any areas of the substrate left exposed these should be filled in before application of texture coat. A minimal amount of texture should be left while spraying first coat. If an excessive amount of material is needed to achieve full coverage or if a heavy texture is produced while spraying, change to a smaller orifice size, increase air pressure and/or add more water to the material. Although primer is not required over all substrates, priming the surface with VariPrime can aid in achieving complete, even coverage and can increase material coverage.
  • Second coat: Apply second coat of ArmourTone using a larger orifice size (3/16-3/8”) and lower air pressure (20-35 p.s.i.). Spray a test area to establish proper material viscosity, orifice size and air pressure settings for the texture desired. If a knockdown or imperfect - smooth texture is desired, proceed to following steps.
  • Knockdown (optional):
    • Imperfect-smooth using ArmourTone Sanded: The texture coat may be knocked down immediately after it has been sprayed using a trowel or a broad knife. Trowel until the desired amount of flat areas versus textured areas is achieved. Approximately 20-30 minutes after the second has been applied it may be stained using VariStain Colorwash if a more mottled appearance is desired. Spray VariStain from a spray bottle set to a fine mist directly onto the wall surface and trowel into the semi-wet finish lightly.
    • Traditional knockdown - All ArmourTone finishes: Allow the material to achieve an initial set and knockdown using a trowel or a broad knife. Clean tools regularly to avoid buildup.

Drying Time
  • 24 hours under moderate conditions. High humidity, low temperatures and surface absorption extend drying time.

Cleanup
  • Water soluble until dry. Clean tools and containers with water prior to drying.

Testing

Test Method Results
Scrub Test ASTM D 2486 6500 cycles

Limitations
  • Ambient surface temperature must be at 40°F(4°C) or above during application and drying time. Supplemental heat and protection must be provided as needed.
  • Use only on surfaces that are sound, clean, dry, and free from any residue which may affect the ability of the finish to bond to the surface.
